Project Overview

Connectra's IT infrastructure team designed and deployed comprehensive network solutions for 20 schools under the Rwanda Education Board, connecting over 2,000 students and staff members to reliable, high-speed internet access. This project was part of Rwanda's Digital Transformation Strategy.

Network Design

Each school received a custom network architecture designed around its physical layout, user count, and bandwidth requirements. Our engineers conducted on-site surveys at all 20 locations, mapping building structures, identifying optimal access point placements, and designing cable routing plans. The network architecture follows a three-tier model: core switches (Cisco Catalyst), distribution switches, and access layer equipment.

Infrastructure Deployment

Deployment involved structured cabling (Cat6a) installation, rack-mounted server rooms in each school, UPS systems for continuous operation during power outages, and outdoor-rated WiFi access points (Ubiquiti UniFi) for full campus coverage including classrooms, libraries, computer labs, and outdoor study areas. Each school achieved 99.5% WiFi coverage with average speeds of 50Mbps per user.

Server Configuration

Each school received a local server running Ubuntu Server 22.04, configured with Active Directory for user management, DHCP for automatic IP assignment, DNS for local name resolution, and a transparent proxy for content filtering and bandwidth management.

Training & Support

We provided 40 hours of hands-on training for 40 school IT administrators (2 per school), covering network monitoring, basic troubleshooting, user management, and emergency procedures. A remote monitoring system (Nagios-based) runs 24/7 from our Kigali operations center.

Challenges

01

Remote Locations

Several schools are in rural areas with limited infrastructure and unreliable power supply. We engineered solar-assisted power backup solutions and used long-range point-to-point wireless links.

02

Budget Constraints

Working within government procurement budgets while delivering enterprise-grade quality required creative sourcing — combining new Cisco core equipment with cost-effective Ubiquiti access layer devices.

03

Diverse Building Types

School buildings ranged from modern concrete to older brick with thick walls. Each required a unique wireless deployment strategy to achieve consistent coverage.

Our Solutions

01

Hybrid Power Systems

Solar panels with battery backup ensure 4+ hours of network operation during power outages — critical for schools in areas with unreliable grid power.

02

Smart Equipment Mix

Enterprise Cisco core switches paired with commercial-grade Ubiquiti access points delivered reliability and performance at 40% less cost than a fully enterprise solution.

03

Site-Specific RF Planning

Detailed RF surveys and wireless heat mapping at each school ensured optimal AP placement, overcoming thick walls with strategic repeater deployment.

Key Results

20 schools connected to high-speed internet within 8 months
99.5% network uptime across all sites
2,000+ students and staff with reliable daily connectivity
40 IT administrators trained and certified
70% of support tickets resolved remotely within 2 hours
Zero extended outages (>24 hours) since deployment

Client Testimonial

"Connectra transformed our schools' digital capabilities. Before this project, most schools had no internet access at all. Now students research online, teachers use digital learning tools, and administrators run cloud-based management systems. The training ensures our own teams can handle day-to-day operations."
